Memories of Gold
2024
Oil on wattle-dyed linen
137×122cm
Alluding to the gentle power of nature reclaiming excavated land, ‘Memories of Gold’ captures the fading history of the artist’s home in the Brisbane Ranges. Once a bustling town with gold-prospecting migrants from across the seas, the town of Steiglitz has now become almost desolate. Beneath the forest floor, scattered bricks and pavers remind us of the houses and roads that once belonged to the people who lived here, and abandoned entrances to old mining tunnels hidden amongst grass trees and old tree stumps.
Wattle trees now dominate the national park, and when in bloom, the forest shimmers like a sea of gold – reminding us of the fading, colonial history of the golden era.
