Bagong Salta
2025
Oil on linen
112×112cm
In the work, Bagong Salta, a Tagalog term that translates to ‘newcomer’, Caday depicts herself sitting on the Bilibid chair, heavily pregnant amongst the bushland that surrounds her home. The Bilibid chair traces back to the American Colonial period when a photograph was published of an incarcerated mother and child sitting on the chair whilst incarcerated in the Bilibid prison. Today the chair’s meaning is superceeded by contemporary representations of luxury, power, and leisure whitewashing the history and significance of its origins. In Bagong Salta Caday reclaims the chair in her landscape highlighting the stories of hardship, power, and labour woven within the threads of Filipino histories.
